What is UIAS and how can it benefit your organization?
The UIAS is a non-profit corporation that accredits conformity assessment bodies in accordance with internationally recognized guides and standards. UIAS also recognizes auditors wishing to demonstrate their competence to various parties internationally. UIAS connects EU, Asia, and other emerging regions to the US economy by meeting the growing need for internationally recognized accreditation services.
UIAS gives conformity assessment bodies (registrars) the recognition they need to do business in an increasingly global marketplace. Accreditation through UIAS can significantly increase the visibility of registrars on the worldwide business scene.
What is Accreditation
Accreditation is an endorsement of a conformity assessment body's (CAB's) competence, credibility, independence and integrity in carrying out its conformity assessment activities.
In everyday language the terms accreditation and certification are often used interchangeably. In the conformity assessment industry however, these terms have very different and specific meanings.
(ISO/ IEC 17000:2004) Certification is "third party attestation related to products, processes, systems or persons." (ISO/ IEC 17000:2004). UIAS only accredits organisations who provide certification and/ or inspection services. These organisations are known as Conformity Assessment Bodies (or CABs).
"In most countries, accreditation is a choice, not an obligation and the fact that a certification body is not accredited does not, by itself, mean that it is not a reputable organization. For example, a certification body operating nationally in a highly specific sector might enjoy such a good reputation that it does feel there is any advantage for it to go to the expense of being accredited. That said, many certification bodies choose to seek accreditation, even when it is not compulsory, in order to demonstrate an independent confirmation of their competence."
